New Castle is a city in Lawrence County, Pennsylvania, 50 miles (80 km) northwest of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; in 1910, the total population was 36,280; in 1920, 44,938; and in 1940, 47,638. The population was 26,309 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Lawrence
County.
Settled in 1812, New Castle was chartered as a city in 1869, and adopted the commission form of government in 1914. From 1870 until World War II, the city was one of the key industrial centers of western Pennsylvania and eastern Ohio. In 1903 the Warner Brothers (of Warner Bros. fame) opened their first theatre, the Cascade, in New Castle. It also boasted the world's largest tin mill, several ceramics factories and steel rolling mills, a bronze bushing factory, a men's apparel plant and much more. At one time its population reached over 52,000. Today it is home to Zambelli Fireworks
