Mobile is the center of Alabama's second-largest metropolitan area, which consists all of Mobile county. Metropolitan Mobile (MSA) has a population of approximately 400,529. Mobile is a part of the Mobile - Daphne - Fairhope combined statistical area (CSA) which had a population 567,625 according to 2004 estimates.Note that the population of the Mobile - Fairhope - Bay Minette combined statistical area only includes the Counties and populations of Mobile(Mobile)and Baldwin(Fairhope and Bay Minette) Its name is derived from the presence of the Mobile (Mauvile or Maubila) Indians in the area at the time of founding. The city is the county seat of Mobile County. The city is the only saltwater port in Alabama. Mobile is home to the second largest, and is the oldest, Mardi Gras celebration in the United States (1703), predating New Orleans.
